Commenting on the UK Government’s SMR competition, All Party Parliamentary Group for Small Modular Reactors Chair, Baggy Shanker MP for Derby South said:
“It’s fantastic to see a Labour Government once again leading the charge on nuclear energy after years of delays, false starts and missed opportunities.
“With Rolls-Royce based in Derby, many of my constituents are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the government’s SMR competition, expected this June. Small Modular Reactors could be a game-changer for the UK energy landscape – not only providing clean power to the national grid but also directly supporting industry thanks to their compact size, flexibility and lower cost.
“A strong SMR programme in the UK would bolster our energy security and could unlock thousands of high-skill jobs, especially here in Derby, strengthening our economic security too.”
